The Cottage Comes to Austin

October 15, 2008

I’m spoiled. I live in a beautiful, growing, entrepreneural state. I live in a creative, educated, wealthy city. I live in a very educated, wacky, coveted neighborhood.

I can shop at one of the best Whole Foods in the world. I have an amazing co-op with tons of vegan food that I can walk to… and it’s open until 11pm every night. I even have a great little independent supermarket a quick stroll from my house for local tortillas, hemp milk, and almost anything else I need.

With all this abundance, I still miss Vitamin Cottage.

If you’re from Colorado, you know what I’m talking about. Sure, some people now call it “Natural Grocers,” but I refuse to. It will always be Vitamin Cottage in my heart!

Vitamin Cottage is the absolute sweetest little health food store. It’s everything Wild Oats used to be back in the early 90s (another child of Colorado) when we were still innocent to Whole Foods’ flamboyant ways. It’s cheap, homey, and full of regular people who prefer organic food. All the produce is organic, and there’s a super amazing bulk section where everything is prepackaged. So you get bulk prices without having to sift through a bulk bin. You could seriously shop there and get great organic vegan food for around $20 a week.

I have been trying to put Vitamin Cottage out of my mind, but it’s hard. I know it’s a mostly Colorado only deal, and I figured it was one of those things I had to give up when I moved to Austin (like cold nights). I can’t help but miss it though! I miss the bulk organic pine nuts, the lack of hippie dogmatism, and the friendly employees. I miss not ever looking at prices because I know everything is so inexpensive. I miss walking into the produce section and knowing that absolutely everything is organic.

Today I was reading the local mailing list for my neighborhood, and someone mentioned that an old sporting goods store was about to be replaced with a “natural grocery.” I was happy to hear this, but I didn’t get too excited. I figured it could be anything – even something totally icky like GNC.

A couple hours later, I was reading a random Austin blog and right before my very eyes: VITAMIN COTTAGE IS MOVING TO AUSTIN. Not just Austin, my precise neighborhood… which isn’t all that big. Little did I know that Vitamin Cottage has decided to expand into Texas, and this store down the street will be one of their very first ventures.

I am beyond thrilled. I was initially so exhuberant that I made my voice a little hoarse. Very soon, hopefully in a matter of weeks, I will be able to take a walk down to my favorite grocery store to get whatever bulk vegan food my heart desires. Even though it may not be all that special compared to the other super star grocery stores in Austin, Vitamin Cottage will make me feel like I’ve brought a little part of Colorado to Texas with me.

These Vegan Brownies Prove I’m Cursed

Okay, so here’s the deal. Whenever Bill and I move away from somewhere, it gets instantly better. Not better enough to move us back (we’re too flighty for that)… but better enough to make us regret that said place was not as cool when we lived there.

For example, shortly after we moved away from Quincy / Boston:

  1. An amazing Asian food court opened in Quincy Center
  2. An amazing sushi restaurant opened in Quincy Center
  3. An amazing healthy restaurant with vegan burgers opened in Quincy Center
  4. They started giving FREE VEGAN COOKING CLASSES at our local library in Quincy
  5. They opened up an amazing Chinatown in Quincy, with tons of funky vegan food options and Asian goods
  6. Boston real estate prices went down a lot, so much that we could afford to buy in any of the areas we wanted to buy in for much less than we expected to pay
  7. The Red Sox won the World Series pretty much right after we got out of town (only to be made more painful when we ended up seeing the Red Sox crush the Rockies in the World Series the only year we had Rockies season tickets… and the only time we weren’t rooting for the Red Sox)

And so it goes… I’m already starting to see that our curse from Colorado Springs is lifting. I don’t have a lot of proof, but a few cool things have popped up now that we’re moving.

  1. FIBER internet right to our old house (after we had closed on our new house, of course)
  2. An Apple store scheduled to open by the end of the year
  3. An indie Mac store right by our house that seems pretty cool
  4. A second Whole Foods
  5. A bigger Vitamin Cottage (a very cool indie health food store)
  6. A movie theater with all digital screens (even though it’s really hillbilly and scary)
  7. A new yearly film festival in Colorado Springs
  8. The demise of the New Life Church
  9. Best vegan brownies ever at Whole Foods
  10. 1000-1 ratio of Obama to McCain stickers

So, sorry Austin. I probably am cursing you by moving to your great city. I expect years of stagnation while I live there, and years of amazing growth once I’m gone.

4 Things I Might Miss About Colorado Springs

May 31, 2008

Okay, so the deal isn’t done for my new house quite yet… but if all goes as planned, I will be moving from here in a matter of days. And I know I complain about Colorado Springs a lot, so here are a few things about my old house that I actually like. Who knows? I might even miss them from time to time. Videos included!

1) Our view. Mountains are beautiful. Pikes Peak is amazing, and I do sometimes take the view for granted. Great sunsets. Great sunrises (but I rarely got up for them).

2) Our loft. Bill and I fell in love with this loft space when we bought out house (it opens up to the deck where the great view is). We eventually turned it into a reading space, which every house should have.

3) Our bench. A great place to relax, reflect, or take a nap if you’re small. This bench made me dream of moving to the country – even though we’re moving to a more urban neighborhood instead.

4) My baby Aspen trees. I love Aspen trees, and I decided our yard didn’t have enough of them. I will probably miss grown up Aspen trees as well, but the babies are my favorite!

May Day Snow

May Day Snow

This is definitely something worth protesting!

We heard this snow was coming, but we didn’t believe it. It was in the mid-70s yesterday, and we slept with our heat off. Needless to say, the house was rather cold this morning.

Snow in May happens here most years, but we got more than we normally do in May. And more is expected tonight and tomorrow night.

I don’t really mind the May snow right now, because our house is really cozy. Howver, I will be glad when winter is over… whenever that may be.

Gradient Sky Over Garden of the Gods

It was beautiful today in Colorado Springs, so I mostly blew off work during the day.

I spent a lot of time outside, including a long hike / walk at Garden of the Gods.
