These Vegan Brownies Prove I’m Cursed

Okay, so here’s the deal. Whenever Bill and I move away from somewhere, it gets instantly better. Not better enough to move us back (we’re too flighty for that)… but better enough to make us regret that said place was not as cool when we lived there.

For example, shortly after we moved away from Quincy / Boston:

  1. An amazing Asian food court opened in Quincy Center
  2. An amazing sushi restaurant opened in Quincy Center
  3. An amazing healthy restaurant with vegan burgers opened in Quincy Center
  4. They started giving FREE VEGAN COOKING CLASSES at our local library in Quincy
  5. They opened up an amazing Chinatown in Quincy, with tons of funky vegan food options and Asian goods
  6. Boston real estate prices went down a lot, so much that we could afford to buy in any of the areas we wanted to buy in for much less than we expected to pay
  7. The Red Sox won the World Series pretty much right after we got out of town (only to be made more painful when we ended up seeing the Red Sox crush the Rockies in the World Series the only year we had Rockies season tickets… and the only time we weren’t rooting for the Red Sox)

And so it goes… I’m already starting to see that our curse from Colorado Springs is lifting. I don’t have a lot of proof, but a few cool things have popped up now that we’re moving.

  1. FIBER internet right to our old house (after we had closed on our new house, of course)
  2. An Apple store scheduled to open by the end of the year
  3. An indie Mac store right by our house that seems pretty cool
  4. A second Whole Foods
  5. A bigger Vitamin Cottage (a very cool indie health food store)
  6. A movie theater with all digital screens (even though it’s really hillbilly and scary)
  7. A new yearly film festival in Colorado Springs
  8. The demise of the New Life Church
  9. Best vegan brownies ever at Whole Foods
  10. 1000-1 ratio of Obama to McCain stickers

So, sorry Austin. I probably am cursing you by moving to your great city. I expect years of stagnation while I live there, and years of amazing growth once I’m gone.

4 Things I Might Miss About Colorado Springs

May 31, 2008

Okay, so the deal isn’t done for my new house quite yet… but if all goes as planned, I will be moving from here in a matter of days. And I know I complain about Colorado Springs a lot, so here are a few things about my old house that I actually like. Who knows? I might even miss them from time to time. Videos included!

1) Our view. Mountains are beautiful. Pikes Peak is amazing, and I do sometimes take the view for granted. Great sunsets. Great sunrises (but I rarely got up for them).

2) Our loft. Bill and I fell in love with this loft space when we bought out house (it opens up to the deck where the great view is). We eventually turned it into a reading space, which every house should have.

3) Our bench. A great place to relax, reflect, or take a nap if you’re small. This bench made me dream of moving to the country – even though we’re moving to a more urban neighborhood instead.

4) My baby Aspen trees. I love Aspen trees, and I decided our yard didn’t have enough of them. I will probably miss grown up Aspen trees as well, but the babies are my favorite!

The Seventh Thing I Like About Austin

May 29, 2008

Neighbors talking… online.

When I first starting talking to people I met in Austin, they told me that they learned everything about their neighborhoods through email lists. I couldn’t believe that neighborhood email lists in Austin could be that active (the NYT had convinced me this was for Manhattan condo dwellers only). But I was proven wrong.

I just joined the neighborhood mailing list for the neighborhood I’ll be moving into, and it’s amazing. The number of members is nearing 1000, and everyone is really friendly and helpful. I’ve found out that I can have chickens in the city… or use a non profit car sharing service. Neighbors report on suspicious activity – and thank each other for little acts of kindness.

This is something my current neighborhood could have really used. Instead, I ended up living next to people who were scared of the world, obsessed with property values, and too cowardly to tell me they didn’t like the wild flowers growing in my yard (instead they called the city on me). A little more communication would have helped… or at least helped me know not to buy a house here. The funny thing is, I’m pretty sure my new neighborhood in Austin is safer and more likely to hold its value. And people there actually brag about not mowing their lawns!

Paul Graham is right, smart, internet savvy, progressive people need to stick together. There’s rapidly becoming two classes of people, like it or not.

I see the US fragmenting more every day: Those who are internet literate. Those who aren’t. Those who can converse rationally with their neighbors and build community. Those who are looking for neighborhood with big garages and “good schools.” Those who make a living from their intelligence. Those who think they deserve a certain sized paycheck. Those who don’t overextend themselves, leaving themselves resources to be creative and innovative. Those who buy into the “debt” culture at the expense of any sense of financial reality and personal sanity. Those who have tolerant, socially libertarian / liberal values. Those who want to go back in time, as far back as needed to put chastity belts on their daughters.

I spent four years living among the wrong class of people. And while most people online are like me, it’s still isolating to know your neighbors would vandalize your house if you put up a pro gay marriage sign.

I’m ready to start living among my peers again.

It was beautiful today in Colorado Springs, so I mostly blew off work during the day.

I spent a lot of time outside, including a long hike / walk at Garden of the Gods.
